An opposition friend sent us this letter he received from Vermont’s Governor:
Thank you for your correspondence and for expressing your beliefs about Hydro-Quebec. I am sorry that our contract with Hydro-Quebec is an issue on which we disagree.
As Governor, I understand that any form of power generation will have some environmental impacts. Our challenge is to find those sources that will mitigate the impacts of climate change as much as possible for Vermont and the United States.
Our Vermont Legislature recognizes Hydro-Quebec as a stably priced, renewable energy source for Vermont. Hydro power is a valuable alternative to escalating fossil fuel prices and retrofit costs, and it does not contribute to the air quality problems of our region.
The preservation and conservation of our eco-systems and lands in Vermont are crucially important to the culture of regeneration and sustainability that we are working toward in choosing renewable energy sources. I appreciate your contacting me regarding this issue. Please don’t hesitate to contact my office again if I can be of further assistance.
